YURI PETUKHOV

People’s Artist of Russia, winner of the Glinka State prize, winner of all-Russian and international awards for ballet dancers and ballet masters. Holder of the Order of Honor and Dignity.

In 1972, he graduated from the Perm State Ballet School (class of Yuli Plakht), in 1989, he took a degree at the Ballet Direction Department of the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) State Conservatory (class of Nikolai Boyarchikov).

He worked at the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, the London Festival Ballet (guest soloist), and the Classical Ballet company in Valencia. He was a leading soloist of the Mikhailovsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, with more than 50 parts in classical and modern productions.

He began to stage performances while still studying at the conservatory. Selected works: Italian Capriccio, Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Don Jose, or the Carmen’s Passion, Scheherezade, Yesenin, The Colour of Pomegranates, Bolero, Women’s Portraits, etc.

In 2001, he took over the “Miniature Company” theatre, founded by Leonid Yacobson (Academic Ballet directed by Askold Makarov). He reorganized it into the Leonid Yacobson Ballet Theatre and restored the repertoire. For the revival of the ballet Wedding Procession in 2003, the theatre won the “Golden Mask” National Theatre Award in the “Heritage” category, in 2004, it was awarded “Golden Soffit” for the revival of the ballet The Bedbug and Yacobson’s miniatures.

Since 2000, he has been teaching at the Vaganova Ballet Academy (Saint Petersburg). Currently, he is the head of the Department of Ballet Master Education.
